Participants can start at 1 p.m. at Blue Moose Bar and Grill, 507 Second St. N.W., East Grand Forks, or at GuestHouse Town House Inn, 710 First Ave. N., Grand Forks.
Purchase a map for $15 and visit each of the 18 participating businesses to receive a stamp on your map. Those who are 21 years old and older will receive a wrist band, which will allow them to receive free wine samples at each location. However, people under 21 years old are also encouraged to attend.
Participating businesses, including Daktyl Tattoo Gallery, Bonzer’s Pub and Kittson & Third Boutique, are all located within walking distance in downtown Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.
The event is sponsored by North Valley Arts Council and Greater Grand Forks Convention and Visitors Bureau.
‘Casual, fun environment’
With area artists available at each business, the goal is to promote the area’s art culture. Participants are encouraged to discuss the art, ask questions and even purchase artwork.
“A lot of times you feel intimidated talking with artists, so it’s a casual, fun environment to engage with artists,” said Kirsten Stewart, marketing director for North Valley Arts Council. “It gives you an opportunity to ask questions and get to know them.”
Although the majority of artwork is painting and photography, Stewart said any visual artist is encouraged to apply for the event. A few musicians will be participating this year as well, including acoustic trio Calamity James.
Artist Jan Wunderlich, of Grand Forks, has participated in the Art and Wine Walk for four years. This year, she will show a variety of artwork including bracelets, quilts and handmade purses at Level 10. She said she loves interacting with the people during the walk.
“I love every aspect of the event,” Wunderlich said. “The people, the feedback I get; I do very well.”
About 400 people participate in the walk every month. Some even come to the area from Canada and other communities each year, Stewart said.
“It’s just a really great way for businesses to promote themselves, but the main focus is the artists,” she said.
After visiting each of the businesses, participants can make their way to the Empire Arts Center for a champagne reception at 5 pm. Those who have received all 18 stamps will be eligible for larger door prizes.
“We encourage people to try and get all the stamps, but it’s not the end of the world if they don’t,” Stewart said. “We really want to give them the time that they need and want to really enjoy the art.”
Art and Wine Walks will take place the third Saturday of every month from June to October: June 15, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21 and Oct. 19. Season passes can be purchased for $50.
